The Current Topics in Biochemistry (CurTo) is a symposium that aims to promote interdisciplinary scientific communication and discuss cutting-edge research in Biochemistry, facilitating the networking among graduate students, post-docs, principal investigators, and professionals, and also providing novel insights through collaborative efforts. The symposium has been organized by researchers and students from the Graduate Program in Biochemistry since 2018 and is aligned with the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC)

The first edition of the event, CurTo 2018, with support from FAPESC. The event brought together 200 participants, 60 posters, oral communications, and speakers from UFSC and other Brazilian institutions such as USP, UFRJ, UFRGS, and FURG.

In 2019, the event featured 15 lectures by renowned researchers from UFSC, UFRJ, FURB, USP, UFRGS, and the University of Calabar, Nigeria, as well as 15 oral presentations and 65 posters.

The 2021 edition was held synchronously and virtually from November 10 to 12, with support from FAPESC. On the first day, we hosted the pre-event “Science is made by all of us,” which was entirely organized and moderated by students and aimed at high school and undergraduate students. On November 11 and 12, we held discussions on topics such as “Structural Biochemistry and Bioinformatics,” “Environmental Toxicology,” “Metabolism,” and “Cell Signaling,” bringing together participants from public and private institutions across 12 states, as well as national and international speakers from several universities (Münster University, Spanish Research Council, University of Elche, NOVA University of Lisbon, Salk Institute, University of Aveiro, and University of Texas).

CurToBiochem 2023 (with support from FAPESC) had 147 participants, 58 posters presented by students, 8 oral communications, and 12 lectures by external guests and UFSC researchers. During the two-day event, poster sessions and a scientific photography contest were held, aiming to promote science communication and the popularization of science to the non-academic community. Over the years, the event has grown stronger, with proven success in fostering scientific discussions, collaborations, and exchanges among students and early-career researchers.

For the 2025 edition, our proposal aims to expand the event, with the in-person participation of researchers from different regions of Brazil and international researchers.
